You may have already heard folk-pop group The Weepies and not even know it!  Apparently their music has been used in quite a few tv shows and a few commercials, and “Say I Am You” even hit #1 on iTunes.  So maybe you do know them already.  I only just discovered them yesterday, and I must say I’m quite smitten with their gentle, twinkling melodies and earnest but sophisticated lyrics (which charmingly speak of longing and love).  Their sound is warm, simple, and altogether very enjoyable, like a cup of warm cocoa on a blustery autumn day.

Gotta Have You was the first song of theirs that I heard (via a chinese e-card no less).  It’s a great example of their straightforward love songs and amusing wordplay.  I really love her voice.  It’s very intimate and fits the music perfectly.  Deb and Steve were actually solo artists before they met at a gig and decided to work together.  They eventually fell in love and married (between the release of this and their 3rd album).  The cover of “Say I Am You” has a cute drawing (by Deb I believe) of two love birds, and I am presuming that much of the material is actually being sung to each other.  This genuine and earnest emotion can really be felt in the melodies and performances here.  Opeth this is not, but I think there’s a place for both in your playlist.  There certainly is in mine.  Check out this really cute fan-made claymation video for World Spins Madly On and you can listen to another great tune from “Say I Am You” – Nobody Knows Me At All – below.

  1. wow, great choice, mons! i think this is probably my favourite song (Gotta Have You) on the whole site alongside Mille’s Give Me Some More.

  2. hey how do you start a blog like this? i would like to do something like this with my poetry.

  3. Well, I use dreamhost to host the site and register the domain. They have an easy-to-install version of WordPress, which is my blogging software. Once that’s up and running, adding posts and so forth is really easy. If you don’t want to pay for hosting and a domain, you can just get an account on http://en.wordpress.com/signup/ and blog from there using WordPress. Blogger, offered by Google, is another really popular one: https://www.blogger.com/start

  4. Deb Talan has a very remarkable voice; quite piercing and pleasant to the ear. I would like to see them play at the Winnipeg Folk Festival!
